Or do you want to dissuade me and tell me to get something different? Because now is the time for that.
I may or may not be leaning toward getting another 1.

Yes, get a 128...without the I...

Don’t get a car, get a trike and have some dogs pull it

I’d rather not have a car that lent its design to this:
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:31 |

Problems with that:
30 miles from work
I want a cat
not enough HP

Try boost, get a 135i.

I’m don’t want to deal with expensive issues, and the N54/N55 have some potentially expensive issues. My dad has a VANOS issue in his 135is, I do really like that car though. The down low torque is addicting.

Import a Holden

Have you tried a Boostang?
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:43 |

I don’t make enough money for that anymore. Gone is the oil money, but my quality of life will return so it’s a good trade off.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:43 |

Then get the car that inspired the 2002...

I had a rental mustang and did not like it. I test drove a FoST and really liked it, so I might go that route.

I don’t think a backwards turbo motif would look as good on the Corvair.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:46 |

The Corvair had it’s own Turbo emblems.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:47 |

That’s actually really cool, I didn’t know that.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:49 |

Rental Mustang vs Ecoboost Premium with a stick would be a bit different than a rental, and can be had for FoST prices or less
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:50 |

I didn’t like the seating position and things like that, things that could not be fixed with a different engine and gearbox. I’m not really a fan of cars with really high belt lines.

E90 is other possibility, right?
idk what importance purchase price and operating costs — if there’s even enough difference to matter — have in the decision; or how much appeal simply having driveway variety has, but if none of these is important...FWIW it’s probably more common for people to wish they’d bought a little larger, not a little smaller, car.
Also if you like E90's a non-M would be enough different from the //M that there’d be variety.
OTOH if you wish you’d owned the 1 a bit longer, makes sense to scratch that itch now. *misses the E34 for similar reasons*
Lol bet this was of no help...
Whichever you get can always be traded if necessary ;-)
![]() 02/18/2017 at 19:52 |

Ah, fair enough.

I haven’t ruled anything out at this point. I do really like the E90 in general, I’d just want one with an LCI with a sport pack.
The requirements are:
It has to be cheaper to run than the M3
Cost between 15-25k
Get around 25 mpg combined
Not suck to drive
I like my 128i when I had it and it meets all those criteria. I also never wished it was any bigger when I had it. Although, an E90 basically does the same stuff while being bigger.
Since I won’t be making oil money, I’d rather not lose a bunch of money on a car by trading it in cause I don’t like it.

It wasn’t the rental spec that bothered me, it was other things so I don’t think I’d be happy with one. The FoST on the other hand, damn. The clutch was so light and the shifter felt better than my M3.
Also, since I have the M3, it’s not like I need my DD to also be able to handle everything.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:05 |

Change it up a bit.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:06 |

What are you suggesting then?
Part of me thinks I should go the familiar route, part of me thinks I should get something completely different. Right now I’m trying to decide what I want.

One more comment, then promise I may or may not stop.
My ChemE dad approaches stuff like this by asking, “If you could have *any* outcome you wanted, what would it be?”
If that is post-LCI E90 with sport package, low miles, and MT...make it happen.
It’s out there...just hafta find it, so find it.
Of course, if it’s, “get something before I start the new job,” or “1-series” well, there you go.
Just, if you there’s something you know you *really* want — don’t settle
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:14 |

I don’t have a particular suggestion, just the basic advice that variety is the spice of life.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:19 |

You don’t have to stop.
Basically I have pretty much exactly what I want now. So the second car can be whatever. I have the car I always wanted to this is a chance for me to change it up or get a non-M BMW and enjoy that.
It took me 2 months of searching everyday to find my M3, I’d rather not go on a unicorn hunt again. I also had the money to spend back then to do that.
Worse comes to worse I just drive the M3 while I choose a new car.
What I really want is an M-sport 335d with a quaife diff and a 6 speed, but I don’t have the money to make that happen. I realize that the car doesn’t really exist, but with enough money I could make it happen.

Fair enough.

Giulia lease.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:37 |

If this was 2014 you could convince me of the such. 2017 me is trying to be cheaper.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:38 |

CPO 500 Abarth then it’s basically the same thing. :P
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:38 |

Cheaper you is considering getting a second BMW?
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:40 |

Cheap is relative. The 128i can be had for right around 15k and it’s much cheaper to run than the M3.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:43 |
|
I have no advice for you.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 20:51 |
|
That’s kind of you to say haha
Hmmm...I’m hearing you’re not at the point right now where you’re prepared to spend all the way to an “//M335d” (sounds pretty damn cool, actually)...
...what would it be like to get started on it now; find a good-candidate 335d then build it out in stages based on inspiration, opportunity, and budgeting?
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:11 |

I’m worried about the potential $4k repairs. I can’t afford 2 really expensive BMWs.

Cheapest local car on craigslist.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:14 |

You gotta find an m-sport(or whatever the 135 looking one is called)one. Always seemed like a reliable and fun to drive alternative to a 135i. Gotta at least get the sport seats!
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:16 |

Nah
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:17 |

3 words. wrong. fucking. color.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:19 |

You can just get the sport pack and you get the sport seats. That was like one of three options my 128i had and it was needed. I at least want the sport pack, if for no other reason than the sport seats.
My father drives a 135is, and while I like it, I don’t want to have to maintain it.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:19 |

Then I would get an Abarth 500 that has depreciated nicely, or a pristine first gen Escalade. The point is, get something completely different IMO.
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:21 |

I need a sport pack, but sadly the only one near me lacks that. Seriously though, I’ve been looking for another burgundy one. This is it , which is too bad cause I do like the car.

Corvette, bc fun. Or something fuel efficient for a 30 mile commute, Honda Accord coupes are fun!

I have thought about a Honda Accord coupe, I might have to drive one.

335d has issues? Understood, the N52K is relatively issue-free, for what it is
![]() 02/18/2017 at 21:36 |

The N52 seems about the most reliable engine BMW has made as of recent.
